SAALFELD FAIRY GROTTOS
Glück auf! (Good luck!) was the traditional miner's greeting that also begins the tour through the former alum slate mines called "Jeremias Glück" (Jeremiah’s Luck), which are today called the Fairy Grottos.
On a tour through the "most colorful show caverns in the world" (Guinness Book of Records) you will discover a fascinating underground world and at the same time learn a lot of interesting facts about how it evolved, the former life of the miners, and more.

LITTLE FAIRY WORLD
The magical fairy gate leads into the world of nature spirits. They live here, in the enchanted forest above the fairy caves – the fairies and elves, the goblins and trolls. Winding paths invite you to discover the Garden of Fairy Plants, the Grove of the Light Elves, the Kingdom of the Forest Spirits and the Elves’ Meadow. All you need is your imagination and time to dream. With a little luck you might even encounter a real fairy.

Grottoneum
Here it is all about touching, marveling, and discovering something new. Exciting interactive and knowledge stations invite you to discover the secrets of mining, stalactites and minerals. In the Grotto Cinema, the evolution of the grottos is explained. How did the miner once light up his lantern? How do the stalactites get their colors and shapes? HOHER SCHWARM CASTLE RUIN
This former town castle of the counts of Schwarzburg was built as a residential tower or bailiwick around 1300. Since the middle of the 16th century it has been a ruin, but it has always been one of Saalfeld's landmarks.

RENAISSANCE TOWN HALL
The Town Hall was built between 1529 and 1537 and is an early example of Thuringian-Saxe Renaissance architecture. The staircase is embellished with the city coat of arms decorated with its Saale fish, as well as the Saalfelder Elle.

ST. JOHN’S CHURCH
Built between about 1380 and 1514 under the influence of the Prague Parler Bauhütte (building school of Peter Parler), St. John’s Church is one of the largest hall churches in Thuringia. Today it is the city parish church. The special features: Holy grave inside, painting of the choir vault with plant representations and a life-size sculpture of John the Baptist.

CITY MUSEUM IN THE FORMER FRANCISCAN MONASTERY
The only medieval monastery complex in Eastern Thuringia that has been so extensively preserved, founded around 1250. The double-span church was erected around 1300, and the cloister and chapels followed around 1500. Since 1904, it has been a museum with an extensive art and cultural-historical collection.

DARR GATE OR MARKET GATE
The oldest gate tower of the medieval town fortifications dates from the 14th century, and is equipped with a crenellated wreath and conical helmet. From the top of the tower there is a magnificent panoramic view over the town on the Saale. Three other well-preserved town gates can be visited.

COURT OR MARKET PHARMACY
This Romanesque tower house was built around 1180. Originally the seat of the imperial town governor (Stadtvogt), it has been a pharmacy since 1681.

FORMER RESIDENCE PALACE
Built between 1677 and 1720 on the site of the former Ottonian royal palace of the 10th century and a later Benedictine monastery, it served as the palace of the dukes of Saxe-Saalfeld. There are three wings in total, with a richly decorated baroque chapel in the north wing. Today it is the seat of the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt District Office.

BERGFRIED ESTATE
Ernst Hüther had the mansion built on a hill in Saalfeld between 1922 and 1924 by the renowned Dresden architects Lossow & Kühne. It is located above the chocolate factory. Today, you are free to leisurely stroll through the large public park.

ST. MARTIN’S CHAPEL
The chapel of the former Siechenhospital (Transl. note: old German word for a hospital for the old and sick) presumably built around 1264, has been documented since 1338. The early-Gothic building is quite unembellished but culturally and historically valuable.
