The royal residence of the 10th century grew into a flourishing imperial and Hanseatic city. Even today, the city wall, the town hall, eleven Gothic churches and many stone and half-timbered town houses still dominate the cityscape. The sermons of the radical reformer Thomas Müntzer made Mühlhausen a center of the Reformation and the Peasants' War in 1524/25. Since the 16th century, poets and composers have made the city a place where Protestant church music was cultivated, the highlight of which was the work of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Die Stadt Mühlhausen lädt im April 2026 zu einer Informationsausstellung zur Kommunalen Wärmeplanung (KWP) ein.
Anlässlich seines 90. Geburtstags zeigen die Mühlhäuser Museen eine Werkschau des Malers unter dem Titel »Begegnungen | Räume | Menschen«. Zu sehen sind 40 Bilder aus seinem umfangreichen, über 60 Jahre währenden intensiven Schaffen – von der feinen Bleistiftzeichnung bis hin zum expressionistischen Ölgemälde.
